Cologne, one of the host cities for UEFA 2024, is a city that has a rich history and a vibrant culture. During my recent visit to the city, I had the opportunity to explore different areas and learn more about its fascinating past and present.
One of the first things that struck me about Cologne was its history. The city has a long and storied past that dates back to Roman times. Founded in 50 AD, Cologne was an important trading center and became a major pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Today, the city is home to some of the most impressive examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, including the famous Cologne Cathedral. This stunning cathedral is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Germany and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As I explored the city, I also had the chance to visit the area of Ehrenfeld. This neighborhood has become a hub for sustainability, with many businesses and startups focusing on eco-friendly practices. I visited a few coffee shops that were committed to using fair-trade and organic coffee beans, and also learned about a startup that was developing new technologies to reduce waste and promote recycling. It was inspiring to see so many people in the community working towards a more sustainable future.
Another highlight of my visit to Ehrenfeld was learning about the history of 4711, a famous perfume brand that has its roots in Cologne. The name 4711 comes from the address of the original store, which was founded in 1792. It was fascinating to learn about the history of this brand and how it has become an important part of Cologne’s cultural heritage.
In addition to its sustainability efforts and cultural heritage, Cologne is also known for its diverse immigrant communities. I visited a neighborhood where many Turkish immigrants have settled, and it was clear that their culture had become an integral part of the community. I enjoyed some delicious Turkish food and learned about the history of this community in Cologne.
Another area that I visited was Chlodwigplatz, which is home to some of the city’s oldest cafes and restaurants. This area is also where one of the oldest gates to the city still stands. It was fascinating to see how this part of the city had evolved over time and to learn about its important role in Cologne’s history.
Finally, I spent some time in the Neumarket area, which is a popular shopping destination with many restaurants and bars. It was interesting to see how this part of the city had adapted to the changing times, with many modern shops and restaurants coexisting alongside more traditional ones. I also learned about the city’s efforts to promote sustainability, including a program that encourages local businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and use more eco-friendly practices.
Overall, my experience in Cologne was unforgettable. From its rich history and cultural heritage to its commitment to sustainability and diverse immigrant communities, this city has so much to offer. As one of the host cities for UEFA 2024, I have no doubt that Cologne will be a fantastic destination for soccer fans from around the world to witness more than soccer.
